Using PDFs and Acrobat Reader
Some information and forms on the HEC Resources website is supplied using the PDF (Portable Document Format) file type. A PDF is a generic format, which allows documents to be transmitted across a variety of media and computer systems without compromising the layout of the original document. If you are having difficulty viewing PDF files on this site please consult the following list of frequently asked questions:
How can I read a PDF?
In order to view a document created in the PDF format you must first have either:
- Adobe Acrobat Reader OR
- Adobe Acrobat
installed on your computer. Once installed, the software will automatically start each time a PDF is opened on your system or the web. Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free software. Adobe Acrobat which is used to create PDF documents as well as read them is not free.
Why do PDFs not open when I click on the appropriate links on the HEC Resources website?
Adobe Acrobat Reader may not be not installed on your system. If the reader software is not installed your browser will prompt you to download the file to your hard drive rather than open it. Go to the download section of the Adobe website and download the reader.
Why can I not save the your forms on my computer after I download and complete them on line.
Adobe Acrobat Reader permits forms to be completed on line but not to be saved; only Adobe Acrobat does that. The best way to keep a record is to print out an extra copy of the completed form.
Where can I download Adobe Acrobat Reader?
Adobe Acrobat Reader is available from the Adobe website. The software may be downloaded free of charge for a variety of platforms, including Mac, Unix and Windows. The size of the download will vary according to the operating system you are running
